Fear of a Black Planet

Fear of a Black Planet grew from my childhood love of cartoons and the realization that almost none of the characters I loved looked like me. What began as a playful idea—reimagining familiar characters with beautiful brown skin—quickly became a deeper exploration of race, identity, representation, and the Black experience in America.

Blending nostalgia, pop culture, animation, and vibrant color, the series disrupts familiar imagery and asks viewers to reconsider what we accept as “normal,” whose stories are centered, and how those images shape the way we see ourselves and one another.

At its core, Fear of a Black Planet celebrates Blackness while confronting the discomfort that can arise when the dominant narrative is changed. The question at the heart of the work remains simple: What are you afraid of?
